My first clue in one word? Fabio. My mother maintained a rather impressive stash of romance novels in her bedroom closet. While she was away at work, I would often sneak into her closet and stealthily read those novels. Three of my favorites were Johanna Lindsey novels (specifically “Gentle Rogue,” “Defy Not the Heart,” and “Warrior’s Woman”), each of which featured a cover illustration of Fabio in some shirtless ensemble lovingly embracing the heroine of each story. With those chiseled cheekbones, that sculpted torso, and that luscious flowing mane of blond hair, Fabio the pirate/knight/alien barbarian captured my heart thrice over. With Fabio I had my first crush…and my first clue.
